NATURE OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SELF AND WORLD | ||||
ESPISTEMOLOGICAL CLUSTERS | NATURE OF THE SELF (RESEARCHER) | NATURE OF THE WORLD (OR "REALITY") | "KNOWING"= THEORY | "DOING"=PRACTICE |
POSITIVISM (EMPIRICISM) |
* rationalist * objective * separate from the world |
* consists of objective "facts" * yields itself to direct observation |
* theory=rational reflection of how the world operates & is observed * independent of ideology |
* methods are neutral * no involvement in object of study * in control of observed reality |
INTERPRETATIONISM (PHENOMENOLOGY) |
* subjective * meaning giving social being * entangled in inter-subjectivity |
* consists of(inter-) subjective "meanings about facts" * "contructed" * immediate |
* theory grows from meaning-giving * theory = "interpretation of interpretations" |
* necessarily involved * but to be controlled * distance is necessary but relative |
CRITICAL- DIALECTICAL (STRUCTURALIST) |
* rational * (but also) subjective * determined by "structures" and social forces |
* objective and subjective, "dialectically related" * structures operate "behind people's backs" |
* fully ideological * dialectically related to practice * partly rational reflection of how the world works |
* no direct involvement in the area of research (necessary) * ideas and action relate dialectically |
CRITICAL- PARTICIPATIVE (ACTION- ORIENTED) |
* rational - subjective * acting+thinking are "one" * all acts are social and meaning-giving |
* objective and subjective * intersubjective * being=acting= thinking=interacting=changing * structures are acts |
* theory grows from action * is legitimated by action * constant inter- change between knowing and acting |
* fully involved * participant with other participants * constantly and dialectically changing |
TRANSPERSONAL - ECOLOGICAL | "... given a deep enough understanding of the way things are, the response of being inclined to care for the unfolding of the world in all its aspects follows "naturally" not as a logical consequence but as a psychological consequence; as an expression of the spontaneous unfolding (development, maturing) of the self. "The ecological self of a person is that with which the person identifies". There are 3 bases of identification : personal, ontological, cosmological. |
